Sound dampening blankets

Moving blankets are also called commonly called moving pads in the industry and prevent damage by wrapping valuables with a thick protective covering. Constructed of durable fabric wrapped around an inside batting, they’re the best choice for protecting items from scuffs, scrapes, dents, and abrasions during a move. A moving blanket / moving pad is also ideal for items placed in short-term or long-term storage since it provides a layer of soft protection that can be held in place with Big Rubber Bands, Ratchet Straps, Stretch Wrapor other types of tie downs. Due to the popularity and wide use of moving blankets, there are a range of blankets and pads available on the market today. When choosing a blanket, keep in mind your end use, and whether or not you intend to reuse it. There are three main factors that determine the quality of a moving blanket: fabric, weight, and binding material.

Fabric

Non-woven polyester, woven polyester and cotton/poly blends are the three most common types of fabrics used for movers blankets.

Woven fabric is used on higher quality moving blankets and is more durable than non-woven fabric. Woven fabric can be made from polyester, polyester/cotton mix, or even 100% cotton for maximum protection. Woven fabric is softer and offers the best "feel" for the most precious cargo. More economical furniture moving blankets are made from non-woven quilted fabric and work great as warehouse pads and storage blankets as well as for the occasional move.

Woven fabrics are more durable, but cost more than moving blankets in a non-woven fabric. One key benefit of a woven blanket is that it’s typically washable so it’s great for repeated uses.

Weight

Higher quality fabrics generally increase the overall weight of a moving blanket.

Moving blankets, are typically sold in bundles of 12. For example, a dozen moving blankets advertised at "75 pounds per dozen" would mean that each blanket weighs 6.25 pounds. Some blankets are constructed using a thicker batting and/or heavier material to make them more protective against shocks and bumps.

Binding Material

The binding material is the fabric used to finish the edges of a moving blanket. Binding can be made from woven or non-woven fabric as well. Binding prevents the edges of the moving pad/blanket from fraying, thus increasing the life expectancy of the blanket. Higher-end blankets typically are manufactured with woven polyester binding; mid-range options have non-woven binding in polyester or some other synthetic fabric; moving skins have no binding as they are simply filler fabric with no outside cover.

Our categories of moving blankets

Our Best moving blankets are manufactured using cotton/polyester blends and offer ultimate protection and durability. The cotton fiber blend provides a softer touch and its thickness provides superior padding. This category of blankets includes the most durable moving blankets we offer and are intended to "hug" the item you are protecting better than polyester alone. The woven binding allows these blankets to be washed if they become soiled. We recommend using these premium quality blankets for the most precious cargo such as antiques, heirlooms, or high-value items.

Our "Better" quality blankets are made from a combination of non-woven or woven polyester fibers. Woven Polyester is formed from long poly fibers that are woven (intertwined) with each other to form a much stronger fabric that provides a very durable moving blanket that is resistant to tears.

Our "Good" category of moving blankets are also considered our economy moving blankets and are made of non-woven polyester. Non-woven polyester is formed of long synthetic fibers that are NOT woven or knitted together, but rather are bonded together by pressure, heat, chemical, or solvent processes. Non-woven shipping blankets are the least resistant to snags and tears and are the most economical blanket.

While many people search for cheap moving pads, it’s important to consider what you’ll be protecting with the blankets. In some cases, it’s more cost-effective to spend money on high quality moving blankets if the items you are moving or storing are high in value.

Keep in mind that higher quality blankets made of a cotton/polyester blend and a woven binding are usually machine-washable so they’re reusable. After a move, they can be used for other purposes: to line a pet crate, a back seat or cargo area of a vehicle, a rugged cover to use at a sporting event, a hunting trip, camping, etc. Check out our blog post ''Moving Blankets- Not Just for Moving Anymore'' for some great ideas from our customers.

Our specialty categories of blankets include burlap pads, and moving skins, and sound blankets. Burlap pads feature a two-sided construction that combines one more traditional moving blanket side and a tough burlap fabrication on the reverse. They're great for use on items that need protection, but not the level of bulk that comes with a regular moving blanket. A moving skin is recycled cotton without an outer shell layer. The non-quilted construction makes them lightweight and best used as packing or for single-use, or limited-use situations. Sound blankets are one step above our Supreme moving blankets, offering the highest level of protection and padding available. This thick construction and straight stitching makes them popular for use a sound blanket- either in sound/recording studio functions, or to block out unwanted noise.

Additional moving supplies to use with moving blankets

Moving blankets usually provide better results when used in conjunction with Ratchet Straps, stretch wrap, moving straps, Mover Bands or other types of reusable tie downs rather than tape. They provide a much better hold on large objects, and don’t leave a sticky residue as packaging tapes can.

Quilted covers are another option for covering furniture. Like a moving blanket, they are a thick layer of material with batting, but are manufactured in a shape to fit a specific piece of furniture. Our category of Quilted Furniture Protectors and Covers includes covers for a chair, love seat, sofa, refrigerator and washer/dryer/range.
