E-Track Trailer Rails & Accessories
E track is one of the most widely used cargo securement systems for trailers, cargo vans, moving vans, and enclosed semi-trailers. These durable rail systems create adjustable anchor points that allow cargo to be secured using compatible straps, fittings, and accessories.
Because of their versatility, these cargo rails can create horizontal, vertical, lateral, and radial constraints. This makes them ideal for securing palletized freight, equipment, and vehicles inside trailers and vans.
Each rail section includes slots running along its length that act as tie-down points. Compatible cargo straps attach to these slots using spring E-fittings or other hardware. Most straps are 2 inches wide and are available with attachments such as wire hooks or D-rings, making it easy to match the system to your hauling application.
Continue reading or watch the video below to learn more about this versatile trailer cargo track system.
How to Install E-Track
At its most basic, this cargo securement system uses high-strength 12-gauge steel rails mounted to the walls or floors of trailers and vans.
Once installed, the track provides a continuous row of anchor points so straps and accessories can be positioned exactly where they are needed.
Depending on the application and the type of cargo being transported, the rail can be installed using screws, rivets, or welding.
Tip: When welding galvanized rails, ensure proper ventilation since the fumes can be harmful.
Fastener Types
Wood Screws
Designed for wooden trailer floors or walls, these fasteners reduce slippage during installation.
Metal Screws
These fasteners feature a self-drilling tip that usually eliminates the need for pre-drilling.
Through-Bolt Fasteners
This is the most secure installation method and is commonly used for trailer floor mounting.
Do Trailer Track Rails Have a Working Load Limit?
The rail itself does not have a specific working load limit (WLL). This is because the strength of the system depends heavily on the installation method, mounting surface, and fasteners used.
The rails are engineered to match the strength requirements of compatible straps and fittings. However, installers must ensure the system is mounted correctly so it can safely support cargo securement loads.
If you're unsure what installation method is appropriate for your application, consult your trailer manufacturer or installation professional. You can also reference WSTDA T-5 section 3.4 for additional guidance.
Rail Sizes & Finishes
These cargo control rails are typically sold in the following lengths:
- 2 ft sections
- 5 ft sections
- 8 ft sections
- 10 ft sections
They are commonly available in painted or galvanized finishes, allowing you to choose the best option for your operating environment.
Hot-Dipped Galvanized Rails
Galvanized rails use a G-90 coating process to improve corrosion resistance. This protective finish helps prevent rust and ensures long-term durability in trailers that are exposed to moisture or outdoor conditions.
Painted Trailer Rails
Powder-coated rails are finished using an electrostatic process that bonds the coating to the steel surface. This creates a durable finish that resists scratches and wear better than traditional liquid paint.
These rails are commonly used inside enclosed trailers and cargo vans where corrosion exposure is limited.
Horizontal vs Vertical Trailer Track Systems
When installing cargo securement rails, you can choose between horizontal and vertical configurations. Both options provide reliable anchor points but are suited for different cargo arrangements.
Your choice should depend on the type of cargo being transported and the layout of your trailer interior.
Horizontal E-Track

Horizontal rails are the most common configuration used in enclosed trailers and cargo vans.
They can be installed on trailer floors, walls, or trailer beds. The slots run perpendicular to the rail and are spaced about every two inches, providing a large number of tie-down points.
Horizontal systems are commonly used to secure cars, ATVs and UTVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and palletized freight.
When mounted on trailer floors, these rails work well with axle straps, D-rings, and rope tie-offs. When installed on walls, they can support cargo nets, shelving accessories, and other storage solutions.

Vertical Rails
Vertical systems are designed to secure cargo of varying heights and are commonly used in moving trucks and delivery vehicles.
Because the slots run parallel to the rail, this configuration works well with shoring beams that create a second cargo level.
Compared to horizontal systems, vertical rails have a narrower profile and allow D-rings to be positioned perpendicular to the floor.
What Is X-Track?
X-Track rails are a heavy-duty cargo securement system designed to provide flexible tie-down points in trailers, truck beds, and cargo vans.
The unique X-slot pattern creates more anchor locations than traditional cargo rails while remaining compatible with many existing fittings and accessories.
Because X-Track works with standard E fittings, users can continue using their existing straps, shoring beams, and attachments without replacing their cargo control equipment.
