Beacon lights for vehicles are intended to warn of possible hazards. Traditional beacon warning lights used a rotating light, but newer technology uses a flash pattern with an LED light. This method offers increased energy efficiency and reliability since there are no moving parts. Also called Strobe beacon lights, this type of beacon light is also considered an omnidirectional beacon since it displays light in a 360 degree pattern. They also commonly called an amber beacon due to the amber color of the lens.
LED beacons are available in a variety of styles and sizes, but can be categorized into three basic classes. According to a system designed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) specifically for vehicle warning lights, the differing classes help to determine the end use for the light. The SAE standard that spells out the classifications is referred to as the SAE J845.
Warning Lights: Class 1
A Class 1 safety light is the brightest available and has a minimum of four times the intensity of a light that's categorized as a class 2. Class 1 LED beacon lights are installed on vehicles that travel on the roadways: police cars, fire trucks, ambulance, etc. Lights in this class can be thought of as used to clear traffic and offer maximum visibility and safety.
Warning Lights: Class 2
A Class 2 safety light is about 2.5 more intense than a class 3 warning light and is used on vehicles that typically work alongside a roadway or may block a roadway: construction equipment, utility trucks, etc.
Warning Lights: Class 3
Class 3 safety lights offer about 40% of the intensity of a class 2 safety light and are used for identification purposes only. These are safety light products that are used in buildings or other situations where there is little or no natural sunlight. An example of a class 3 safety light is that used on a forklift or other type of small industrial vehicle. Looking for a class 3 light?
