Flatbed Chains and Binders

US Cargo Control offers a wide variety of transport chains, chain binders, and accessories – both import and domestic – for your flatbed trailer transport needs.

Transport Chain

Transport chain is primarily used in the flatbed industry to tie down and secure loads; however, it is also useful in industries such as towing, logging, safety, and oil rigging. To ensure you get the right chain for your application, our selection includes standard grade 70 transport chain, as well as heavier duty options in grades 80, 100, and 120.

What is Chain Grade?

Chain grades are specified by the NACM (National Association of Chain Manufacturers) and the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials).

Their standards define the dimensional, mechanical, and compositional requirements for each chain grade. They are involved in determining factors like the minimum breaking force required, proof of the steel, elongation, etc. – the combination of which dictates the chain’s working load limit (WLL), a crucial consideration when choosing a chain. Not only is correct usage enforced by the DOT, it’s also essential for safety.

To ensure easy identification, chain suppliers are required to clearly mark chain links with their grade at specific intervals: 1-foot for 5/16" and 3/8” chain and 3-foot for 1/2" chain.

Log Chain

Transport chain can be used as logging chain too. Grade 70 chain is approximately 20% stronger than grade 43 log chain and is a great alternative for added strength and durability.

Chain Binders

Also known as load binders, chain binders are essential pieces of tie down transportation equipment. They are used to tighten the chain around the cargo, effectively securing it to your flatbed. We carry two types: ratchet-style and lever-style, each with a different tightening device.

For many, the style they use is generally based on personal preference. If you are still undecided, there are a few advantages to each.

Ratchet Binders

This binder uses a ratcheting mechanism as the chain tightener. One of its main benefits is that minimal energy is stored in the handle, which reduces the recoil risk. It also requires less operator effort – it takes less force to move the handle, and it’s easier to adjust in finer increments.

Lever Binders

A lever binder uses leverage to secure the cargo. While they do have a higher risk of recoil and require more operator strength, they have fewer moving parts, making them easier and faster to use.

Transport Chain Hooks

We stock many different types of transport hooks, making it easy to find the perfect fit for your setup. The most popular are clevis hooks, which have an exceptionally strong attachment point, typically consisting of a fastening device and a bolt or pin:

  • Clevis Grab Hook - Very common on transport chain ends, with a shallow throat opening allowing for easy and secure connections.
  • Clevis Grab Hook with Latch - A latch prevents the chain from releasing and/or re-hooking during removal.
  • Clevis Slip Hook / Sling Hook - Features a wider throat than clevis grab hooks.
  • Clevis Slip Hook with Latch - The added safety latch ensures it's held in place.

Custom Chain Tie Downs

Custom assemblies are available for all chain grades 70 to 120. Specify chain size, end hardware, and length to build the best chain tie down for your application.
