Poly Cord Strapping

Cordstrap Strapping Supplies & Tools

Our packing strapping solutions are engineered for professionals who demand safe and efficient cargo packing, storage, and shipping. Built to outperform traditional steel banding, our Cordstrap composite and woven polyester strapping provides a strong, reliable cargo securement solution well-suited to most applications.

Whether you're bundling pallets in a warehouse, securing freight on a flatbed, or stabilizing goods in a container, our shipping strapping ensures your load arrives safely and intact.

What is Packing Strapping?

Packing strapping is a high-strength banding material used to bundle, reinforce, and secure cargo for transport or storage. Unlike steel banding, synthetic options like composite and woven strapping offer flexibility, shock absorption, and superior handling - without compromising on strength. These materials won’t rust or snap under pressure, making them ideal for heavy-duty and long-haul applications.

What is Shipping Strapping Used For?

The most common usage is palletizing or bundling products, particularly for packing and shipping purposes.

Lumberyards, construction companies, and warehouses use strapping for pallet securement, bundling building supplies like steel and lumber, and more.

Strapping Break Strength Rating

The rating you see for Cordstrap's strapping is for a complete system - meaning you used a tensioner, the strapping is tight, and the buckles are closed. Manually pulling a strap without the proper tools will result in a much lower rating.

Packing Strapping vs. Steel Banding

When it comes to performance and safety, shipping strapping is the clear alternative to steel. Not only is it more flexible and simpler to work with, it offers a number of other benefits:

  • Won't Damage Product: The sharp edges of steel can scratch or abrade the items it's holding together.
  • Safer to Handle: No risk of kick-back / recoil during removal. The lack of sharp edges also prevents employee injury.
  • Stronger Shock Absorption: Ideal for loads that shift or settle in transit. Steel is less flexible and can stretch, where Cordstrap's strapping will remain tight and secure.
  • Rust-Free & Weather-Resistant: Won’t corrode or degrade in moisture, which would not only affect the performance of the strapping, but could also stain your product!
  • Fewer Required Tools: Steel requires two tensioning tools, while our packing strapping only requires one - and no metal-on-metal wear means the tools will last longer!
  • Lightweight & Cost-Effective: Easier to handle, store, and dispose of - poly strapping doesn't maintain it's original form after removal, so it's less of a hassle to get rid of.

Types of Cordstrap Strapping

We offer two strapping options: composite and woven. They are made from polyester and are safer and less abrasive than steel, making them an excellent choice for your cargo securement applications.

Both can be effectively used in most applications, but have some slight differences that can help you decide which style is right for you.

Note: AAR-approved strapping is also available. Get in touch with our product experts to learn more.

Composite Strapping

Cordstrap composite strapping is manufactured with high tenacity twisted polyester yarns in a polymer coating. The yarns can be nicked or torn and still hold to get your cargo from A to B safely.

Compared to woven, it's stiffer and moves more easily when you are bundling items. It does still have some bendability, giving you better performance as you run it under or around a pallet.

Woven Strapping

This flexible Cordstrap polyester strapping type is perfect for securing palletized goods, lumber, steel drums, and more. Compared to composite, woven has more malleability, sticks better to the products, and has a softer feel that makes it nicer to work with.

This shipping strapping is best-suited for maintaining tension during transport, as it has the better shock-absorption of the two.

Strapping Supplies & Accessories

Build a complete securement system with Cordstrap components like metal strapping buckles, strapping tensioners, strapping holders, and pallet needles.

We even offer strapping kits that have everything you need to get started!

Strapping Buckles

Strapping buckles are used to tightly grip and maintain the strap's tension. Created from high-quality steel wire, these products provide the most consistent closing method in the industry.

Buckles for woven strapping have a phosphate coating to better grip the material, while composite strapping buckles have a galvanized finish for smoother performance.

Strapping Tensioners

Our tensioners are easy-to-use and come in several different styles, depending on your usage.

Manual tensioners are perfect for most low-to-medium volume strapping jobs - choose from either basic or premium. They have a similar functionality, but the premium version is designed to last longer and can better handle a higher workload.

We also carry a battery-operated tensioner for high-use applications.

Cordstrap tensioners come with a warranty - if the tool breaks, Cordstrap will repair it! Get in touch with us today to work through the return & repair process.

Strapping Holders / Dispensers

Strapping dispensers are a necessary part of the strapping process. Without a dispenser, if you unfasten the end of the strap, the whole coil will come unwound!

Static, mobile, and forklift-mounted dispensers are available.

Note: Woven and composite strapping do use different dispensers - the woven coil is much smaller, and the dispenser parts are sized accordingly.

Pallet Needles

Pallet needles let you easily feed the strap under a pallet - no more struggling to push the strap through while lying on the floor!

How to Choose the Right Strapping

The primary question to consider when choosing your strapping is load weight. Divide the weight by the number of straps you will add to the pallet - your chosen strap's break strength should be higher than that number.

Example: Your full pallet weighs 1,000 lbs. You plan to add 2 straps to the pallet. 1,000 / 2 = 500, so your strap system break strength rating must be higher than 500.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is composite and woven strapping strong enough to replace steel?

Yes - composite and woven strapping can match or exceed steel banding performance in most use cases, especially with added shock absorption and safer handling.

Can I apply packing strapping without power tools?

Absolutely. We offer a wide range of manual tensioners that don’t require batteries or air compressors.

Are Cordstrap's strapping solutions CTU Code-compliant?

Yes. They are also witness-tested by the DNV.

How does strapping compare to ratchet straps?

Shipping strapping is preferable to ratchet straps in a couple of different instances - if you are palletizing or bundling variably-sized items where you aren't sure of the length needed, and if you are shipping something. It's much cheaper to use the disposable Cordstrap strapping than have to waste a ratchet strap on every shipment.
