Heavy-Duty Cord Strapping
When securing loads for transit, storage, or shipping, Cordstrap cord strapping is the trusted choice for professionals across the construction, transportation, and moving industries. This synthetic strapping material delivers heavy-duty performance, reliable tension retention, and safer handling - making it the modern solution for bundling, palletizing, and freight securement.
At US Cargo Control, our strapping bands are engineered for demanding environments and available in both composite and woven options to suit a wide range of load requirements.
What is Cordstrap Shipping Strapping?
Shipping strapping is a high-tensile, flexible banding material used to stabilize and secure cargo. With a high break strength and good flexibility, it's suitable for heavy and bulky loads, conforming easily to even irregularly-shaped products.
It offers a cost-effective and safe alternative in situations where steel strapping or ratchet straps are used but might not be the right fit.
Cord Strapping vs. Steel Banding
Our strapping coils are designed to out-perform steel in most applications and offer a number of benefits over steel:
- Safe Handling: No sharp edges or recoil hazards.
- Product Protection: Along with being a safety hazard, steel's sharp edges can damage / scratch the finish of your load.
- Weather-Resistance: It won't degrade in moisture, so you don't have to worry about the banding breaking down due to the environment. It also won't stain due to rust!
- Cost-Effective & Lightweight: Simplifies logistics and reduces wear on tools and machinery - steel banding require two tensioning tools, which break faster due to metal-on-metal wear. Cordstrap strapping only requires one tensioner.
Strapping vs. Ratchet Straps
While cord strapping isn't always a good substitute for ratchet straps, there are several situations where it is by far the better choice.
Since strapping is cheaper and disposable, it's the preferred choice for shippers. The cost of sending ratchet straps you'll never get back with each shipment will add up quickly!
It's also better in bulk bundling situations, especially where you are handling loads of many different sizes. Cordstrap strapping is fast and designed to accommodate loads of any size, while ratchet straps are slower and you may not have a long enough strap on-hand.
Types of Strapping Available
We carry both composite and woven strapping - while they are both well-suited for most applications, they have slight differences that can affect which is right for you. All are CTU-Code compliant and have been witness-tested by the DNV.
Note: AAR-approved strapping is also available. Get in touch with our product experts to learn more.
Composite Strapping
Known as “synthetic steel,” composite strapping is made of high-tenacity polyester filament yarn encased in a durable homopolymer shell. This combination delivers outstanding rigidity and strength - ideal for long-term storage.
Most of our Cordstrap composite strapping is Ultra-Flex, which means it maintains flexibility in colder weather - compared to standard composite strapping with a temperature range of 41°F - 176°F / 5°C - 80°C, Ultra-Flex products can be used in temperatures between -4°F - 86°F / -20°C - 30°C. This is perfect for businesses that leave product strapped outside all year long.
Composite Strapping Features:
- Stiffer
- Slides easier for better handling
- Yarns can be nicked or torn and still hold
Compatible Buckles: Galvanized steel buckles have a smooth finish for better performance with the composite material.
Woven Strapping
Woven polyester strapping is crafted from coated high-tenacity polyester yarns, offering flexibility and shock absorption. Perfect for delicate or shifting loads, woven strapping wraps snugly without marring surfaces. It also has the better shock-resistance of the two, great for long-distance transit.
Woven Strapping Features:
- More malleable
- Softer feel
- Sticks better to products
Compatible Buckles: Phosphate-coated buckles to ensure a strong, slip-resistant connection.
Cordstrap Strapping Rating
The most important specification with strapping is the System Break Strength. This is the rating for the complete system - the strapping and a buckle - where a tensioner was used.
If you hand-tightened and did not use a tensioner, the break strength will be much lower.
When choosing the right strapping for the job, make sure that the strength rating is higher than the weight of your load. So if you have a 2,000 lb. load and the strap's system break strength is 1,000, you will need to put a minimum of two straps on the product to ensure the break strength is meeting or exceeding the weight of the load.
Cord Strapping Applications
Our Cordstrap strapping is commonly used in freight and shipping yards, construction and lumber yards, and warehouses. It's perfect for palletizing and bundling.
