How to Install E-Track: The Complete Guide
E-Track is one of the most versatile cargo securement systems available. Whether you're outfitting a cargo trailer, flatbed trailer, or cargo van, installing E-track creates adjustable tie-down points that make securing cargo faster and easier.
With the right fasteners and proper installation, E-track rails can handle demanding loads such as motorcycles, ATVs, equipment, and palletized cargo.
This guide walks you through the basics of installing E-track, including choosing the right rail style, selecting the correct fasteners, and mounting the track securely.
If you're installing E-track for a specific application, these guides walk you through the process step by step.
What is E-Track?
E-track is a slotted steel rail system designed to accept a wide variety of cargo securement accessories. These rails allow you to attach E-track tie-down straps, shoring beams, and other E-track accessories easily and securely.
Because fittings can be secured anywhere along the rail, E-track provides far more flexibility than traditional tie-down points.
Types of E-Track
Before installation, you'll need to choose the type of E-track that best fits your application.
Horizontal E-Track vs. Vertical E-Track
Horizontal E-track has slots that run perpendicular to the rail and is typically installed length-wise along trailer walls or floors.
Vertical E-track has slots that run parallel to the rail and is typically installed vertically, floor to ceiling, on trailer walls.

Galvanized vs. Painted E-Track
Galvanized E-track is best for outdoor applications because it is corrosion and rust-resistant. Painted E-track is typically used in enclosed trailers to match trailer walls or floors.

Choosing the Right Fasteners for E-Track Installation
Arguably, the most important part of your E-track system is the fasteners you choose! E-track rails do not have an established working load limit because their strength directly depends on the quality of their installation.
The best fastener option depends on the surface you are mounting to. If you're mounting into wood, make sure to use screws made specifically for wood. The same goes for metal. Also, consider through-bolting for the most secure install for heavy-duty applications.

Step-by-Step: How to Install E-Track
Step 1: Measure Placement
Start by measuring and marking where the E-track rails will be installed.
Your measurements don't need to be extremely precise, but they should be consistent so the rails run straight along the trailer.
Functionality matters more than exact measurements. The goal is to place rails where they will best secure your cargo.
Step 2: Check for Structural Support
Whenever possible, align the holes of the E-track rail with the structural framing of the trailer. Mounting directly into the trailer frame provides far more strength than fastening into plywood alone.
Before installing, do one last check that the rails are not in the way of ramps or door hardware that may require clearance.
Step 3: Secure the First Fasteners
Begin by installing a few screws at each end of the rail to hold it in place.
Drive screws slowly using a drill or impact driver. Driving too fast can strip the threads and reduce holding strength.
Step 4: Install Remaining Fasteners
You don't need to install a screw in every hole - In most applications, placing a fastener every two to three holes provides more than enough holding strength.
If installing multiple rails, it's often easier to place each section with a few screws first, then install the remaining fasteners after everything is aligned.
