Cargo Net FAQs: Everything You Need to Know About Cargo Nets

Cargo Net FAQs: Everything You Need to Know About Cargo Nets

Cargo nets are versatile, heavy-duty tools designed to secure loads in transit. Whether you’re hauling cross-country in an enclosed trailer or moving furniture in your pickup truck, a cargo net provides fast and easy cargo securement. They eliminate the need for multiple straps by securing gear with one piece of equipment.

There are a variety of cargo nets on the market – from heavy-duty trailer nets to flexible bungee nets. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right solution for your needs. Below, we answer the most common cargo net questions to help you secure your load with confidence

What is a Cargo Net Used For?

A cargo net is a strong, flexible mesh net used to secure loads in transit. Commonly used in truck beds, trailers, and vans, they prevent cargo from falling out or shifting back and forth. They are typically used on pickup truck beds or inside enclosed trailers. Most cargo nets are made from durable polyester webbing or elastic bungee cord.

US Cargo Control carries two primary types of cargo nets:

Heavy-Duty Trailer Nets with E-Fittings: Made from 2” wide polyester webbing with a 12,000 lb. break strength and 8” hole size, these nets fit standard enclosed trailer dimensions and are great for preventing load shifts, separating LTL loads, and protecting drivers from falling cargo when opening trailer doors.

Pickup Truck Cargo Nets: Designed for short, standard, and long truck beds, these nets are made with either heavy-duty polyester webbing or bungee cord and are available in multiple sizes and hook-end varieties.

What is the Best Material for a Cargo Net?

Polyester vs. Bungee: Which is Best?

Polyester webbing is best for heavy-duty loads. It is UV-resistant, abrasion-resistant, and has low stretch, making it ideal for long-term use. It is the strongest option.

Bungee cord nets are flexible, light, and easy to use. They are perfect for irregular or oddly shaped loads, but are not ideal for securing very heavy cargo.

When strength and stability matter, polyester webbing cargo nets are the top choice. For quick, light jobs, bungee nets offer convenience and protection.

What Size Cargo Net Do I Need?

Match the cargo net size to your truck bed or trailer dimensions and account for the height of your cargo load. Larger loads extending over the rail of your bed may require oversized nets.

For enclosed trailer nets, choose full-height or half-height based on your desired coverage.

For truck bed nets, measure from the cab to the tailgate. Consider sizing up if your cargo extends past the rail of your truck bed.

How to Choose the Right Cargo Net for My Needs

Once you identify whether you need a pickup truck net or an enclosed trailer net, there are a few other details to consider:

Tensioners: Ratchet or Cam Buckle?

Cargo nets with ratchets give you superior tension control. They can get tighter than cam buckles, and operator strength isn’t a factor. They are ideal for heavy-duty cargo.

Cargo nets with cam buckles are faster to use than ratchets and reduce the risk of overtightening, making them ideal for fragile cargo.

End Fittings: E-Track or S-Hooks?

If you have an E-track system, cargo nets with E-track fittings are ideal for easy installation. For truck beds without an E-track system, hook-end fittings can easily be attached to standard truck bed anchor points or D-rings.

Can a Cargo Net Prevent Theft?

Cargo nets act as a visible deterrent to theft by making items hard to grab. While not a complete theft security system, they add an extra layer of protection. For improved theft prevention, pair heavy-duty cargo nets with other protection, such as tarps, security chains, or locking tonneau covers.

Will Cargo Nets Prevent Small Items from Falling Out, or Are They Just for Large Items?

Yes, cargo nets can secure all types of items, depending on the hole size. US Cargo Control’s heavy-duty cargo nets have 8” holes, while our truck bed cargo nets have a 6” hole size.

If you need to restrain smaller items, consider a cargo net with tighter mesh or a debris liner for extra containment.

Can I Use This Cargo Net on a Flatbed or Enclosed Trailer?

Yes, you can use cargo nets on both flatbed and enclosed trailers. No matter where you’re installing your cargo net, make sure you’re using the right size and type for your cargo and anchor points.

Can I Use This Cargo Net for Overhead or Vertical Storage in my Garage or Van?

Yes, cargo nets can be used for overhead or vertical storage for lightweight items. For these applications, consider the weight of the items you’ll be storing and how you will mount the cargo net. Cargo nets are best for light- and medium-weight items and should be securely mounted to prevent items from falling.

Cargo nets are incredibly versatile and have tons of applications beyond cargo securement in trailers. US Cargo Control has made custom cargo nets for a variety of applications, such as climbing walls for obstacle courses or gates to block vehicles. How do I Clean and Maintain My Cargo Net?

To clean your cargo net, start by removing any loose debris. Then, wash it with a mix of water and a mild detergent, using a sponge or soft-bristled brush to scrub. Avoid bleach-based detergents or detergents that include acids. Let your cargo net air dry before folding and storing.

Between uses, fold and store your cargo net in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Inspect your cargo net before use, checking for cuts, abrasion, or damaged hardware that could compromise its strength.

Cargo nets are a versatile securement tool for safe, reliable, and quick load securement. Whether you drive a pickup truck, run a delivery van, or haul heavy equipment in a trailer, there’s a cargo net that fits your job.
