Why is it Called Guy Wire?
Ever wonder where the name "guy wire" came from? If you're unfamiliar with this product, don't worry - you've probably seen this product in use. This type of wire cable is crucial to maintaining structures, and it works best in other applications requiring tension and strength.
Guy wire stabilizes and secures free-standing structures. In other words, professional tower-erecting companies use this product to install towers in the antenna, communications, and utility industries.
Guy wire has many names: guyed wire, guy cable, guy strand, and guy anchors. People also (mistakenly) call it guide wire, as the name is derived from the term guy: defined as a rope, cord or cable used to steady, guide, or secure something.
What is Guy Wire?
Guy wire is a tensioned cable that is both lightweight and strong. All of US Cargo Control's guy wire is constructed from extra high strength galvanized steel, meaning its tensile strength is about 40% greater than the high-strength grade. It meets all requirements of ASTM A475-03. The galvanized finish protects it from outdoor elements. It works with several fittings and components making it ideal for many different uses.
Types and Sizes of Guy Wire
Our guy wire is available in two types: 1x7 and 1x19, in several sizes. 1x7 guy wire has 7 wires twisted in a strand, while 1x19 guy wire has 19 wires twisted in a strand. Each type is available in several different diameters, ranging from 1/4" to 1".
1x7 guy wire is stiffer, making it ideal for most tensioning applications. But, 1x19 guy wire is ideal when you need higher working load limits. It is more flexible and resists compressive forces.
Guy Wire Hardware
US Cargo Control offers a wide selection of industry-rated guy wire anchors and hardware.
Big grip dead ends, also knowns as preforms, create termination points and work in high tensioning situations, often for antenna, communications, and transmission towers. You will also need Ice Clip End Sleeves to keep big grip dead ends from unravelling.

Drop forged wire rope clips clamp the loose end of wire rope after forming an eye. They consist of a U-bolt and have a saddle secured in place by two nuts. You'll typically need at least two to three wire rope clips to properly secure ends to the length of wire rope.
Similarly, shackles work to connect wire rope, chains, and slings. Bolt-type anchor shackles are most common and work best in projects involving this wire; however there are a large variety of other styles, sizes, and fabrications to choose from for your specific application.
Thimbles protect the eye or loop of wire rope and prevents it from being crushed. Both regular and heavy-duty options are available.
Turnbuckles help to pull together or push apart guy anchors. The most common are jaw & jaw turnbuckles or jaw & eye turnbuckles.
Guy Wire Installation
Guy wire installation is not a do-it-yourself job. Call a professional or someone experienced and trained with installing this guy wire to help you get started. Custom sizing and pricing are available for contractors and other large-volume customers.
