DIY L-Track Storage Ideas for Trailers and Vans
Most people install L-track for one reason: securement. It is commonly installed on trailer floors and walls to prevent cargo, such as motorcycles and ATVs, from shifting during transit. And that’s where most installs stop.
But with the right preparation, L-track can be more than anchor points – it can work as a modular system to organize the rest of your trailer.
If you are cutting L-track to length during installation and have rail scraps left over, you already have the foundation for smarter storage.
Here are practical ways to use L-track beyond tie-downs.
Store Straps and Tie Downs with L-Track Hooks and Bags
If you’re using L-track, you’re likely using tie-down straps and fittings every haul. Storing them cleanly out of the way is key to a smooth load and unload. A short strip of L-track mounted along the trailer or van wall can transform the space into a dedicated storage area for straps and fittings.
Insert straps and fittings right into the spare track, or add L-track accessories for maximum organization:
- Use small hooks to hang ratchet straps.
- Use medium hooks to hold heavier straps or chains.
- Add a storage bag to hold loose fittings.

Instead of tossing straps in the corner of your trailer to get tangled, stepped on, or rolled over, hang them up and keep them ready for their next haul. And small fittings are easily dropped and lost – keeping them all in one place inside your trailer ensures they’ll be easily accessible.
It’s a small adjustment that makes a big difference in your hauling routine.
Keep Tools Off the Floor with L-Track
Most trailers carry more than the equipment being tied down. You’re likely also carrying tools to support the job.
Consider mounting L-track rails horizontally along the wall and adding tool hooks that can store shovels, rakes, hoses, and other hand tools out of the way but still within reach. This is a great option to utilize vertical space when floor space is limited. Plus, when the floor remains clear, loading and unloading move more efficiently.
Use Wall Space to Store Lumber, Pipe, and Long Materials
L-track also works well for long materials that can’t be stacked easily or stored vertically inside a trailer or van.
By mounting L-track rails horizontally on the wall and spacing out large hooks along the track, you can securely cradle long items against the wall. This works well for items like lumber, PVC pipe, conduit, and more.
Using the length of the wall keeps materials secure and frees up floor space for your bigger equipment. It also prevents materials from shifting and getting damaged during transport.

Create a Modular Storage Wall with L-Track
The biggest advantage of L-track is its flexibility, not just for tie downs, but also for shelving and storage.
Instead of fixed shelving, you can use L-track to build a modular wall system that adjusts to your needs.
Mount multiple strips of L-track vertically or horizontally and then combine accessories as needed. Use small and medium hooks for tie-down straps and small tools, large hooks for longer items, and storage bags for small hardware and fittings. You can move and remove hooks and bags depending on what you’re hauling.
This allows the trailer to adapt to you and your needs.
Don’t Waste L-Track Scraps: Turn Cutoffs into Storage Rails
If you’re installing L-track rails, you’ve likely cut them to the exact size of your mounting area and had rail scraps left over. Don’t toss these scraps! Consider mounting them between wall studs, above wheel wells, or along walls or doors to add extra utility to your trailer. Even short pieces can hold strap hooks, bags, or even just spare fittings while not in use.
While full L-track rails can be mounted along walls for storage, consider that you may already have these additional anchor points lying around after initial installation.
Upgrade Your Trailer with L-Track Accessories
L-track is trusted for its strength and reliability in cargo securement.
But once it’s installed, it offers flexible anchor points that can be used for more than tie down points. If you’re investing the time to install L-track, it makes sense to let it handle more than just the load.
