Wire Rope Clips
Wire rope clips or wire rope clamps are an essential part of wire rope systems. Designed to create a load-bearing eye at the end of your wire rope or to connect two cables, clamps for wire rope allow for easy incorporation of anchor points and other customization.
From rigging systems to anchor lines, wire rope clips are popular in almost every wire rope application. Watch the video below to learn more about how to use these important wire rope accessories:
What is a Wire Rope Clip?
Wire rope clips are mechanical fasteners used on the loose end of wire rope - connecting two wire ropes together or forming a loop. They offer both temporary and semi-permanent connections, well-suited for construction, utility, and transportation work.
These clamps come in two main styles, both of which can be used for a variety of applications.
Standard
Ideal for heavy-duty rigging jobs, standard cable clamps feature a U-bolt and saddle that is secured with nuts. The U-bolt clamps around the wire rope, while the saddle provides a bearing surface. The nuts lock the assembly in place.
The U-bolt covers the dead end of the wire, while the saddle sits on the live end.
Fist Grip
The fist grip style consists of two saddles and heavy hex nuts. The unique design makes installation a breeze - the operator can swing the wrench in a full arc each time!
Unlike the standard option, you can install these at any orientation relative to the live and dead ends.
Wire Rope Clip Construction
We offer a variety of options when it comes to construction, so you can easily find the one best-suited for you.
Material Corrosion-Resistance
While all of our clips are suitable for outdoor use, they offer varying levels of corrosion-resistance.
- Type 316 stainless steel: Considered marine-grade and is the best choice for jobs with maximum exposure to the elements or corrosive elements.
- Type 304 stainless steel: For more moderate exposure to these conditions, type 304 stainless steel will do the trick.
- Galvanized: Next up in terms of corrosion-resistance are galvanized clips. They are an excellent combination of durability and affordability.
- Zinc-plated: Lastly, we have zinc-plated clamps. They will show signs of rusting much quicker than any of the other styles we offer, but are well-suited for dry applications.
Forging Method
Another factor to take into account is how the clips are made. Drop-forging results in the strongest, most durable wire rope clips. Malleable or precision-cast clamps are designed for lighter loads and shorter jobs.
What Wire Rope Clamp Do I Need?
There are several variables to consider when choosing a wire rope clip:
- Size: The size of the clip should correspond to the diameter of your wire rope. So if you are using a 5/8" diameter wire rope, you'll want a 5/8" wire clip.
- Environment: If you are going to be working in a wet or marine environment, choose stainless steel for maximum corrosion-resistance.
- Installation Type: For long-term jobs, forged or stainless steel is better than galvanized or malleable clamps for wire rope.
Installing Wire Rope Clips
Safely applying wire rope clips is important - here are several steps you should always include:
- Inspect your wire rope and clamps for signs of wear.
- Never saddle a dead horse - this saying helps you make sure you are installing the clamps the right way. The U-bolt (not the saddle) always covers the dead end of the rope.
- Tighten nuts to the recommended torque.

Wire Rope Clamp FAQ
Q: Are wire rope clips reusable?
A: Clips should not be reused if they show any signs of wear, corrosion, or deformation.
Q: How many wire rope clips do I need?
A: While the general rule of thumb is "at least three," this depends on factors like wire rope diameter, application, and more. Consult an expert or refer to manufacturer guidelines to make sure you are using the correct number.
Q: What’s the difference between malleable and forged wire rope clips?
A: Forged clips are heat-treated, resulting in extra strength and durability that makes them perfect for semi-permanent installations. Malleable clips are cast iron, which is weaker than steel and suited for lighter-duty applications.
