Pickup Truck Cargo Bars
Cargo bars are the load securement solution for pickup trucks or smaller trailers. Whether it’s tools, totes, coolers, or boxes, a pickup truck cargo bar keeps your load secure from shifting or sliding.
Designed to attach to two surfaces using tension, our adjustable cargo bars prevent your cargo from moving and causing damage. They can also be used to to push cargo away from a surface rather than use force to pull it toward an anchor point.
What Is a Pickup Truck Cargo Bar?
A pickup load bar (also called a truck bed cargo bar) is a telescoping bar that fits across the width of your truck bed. Each end features rubber feet or pads that grip the bed walls without tools, drilling, or permanent hardware, holding your load in place.
This makes them perfect for a variety of applications, including holding storage bins and toolboxes in place, securing groceries, coolers, and camping gear, bracing larger items like furniture or appliances, and creating a partition to separate loads in long beds.
Key Features & Benefits
- Adjustable Fit: Our bars adjust to accommodate a wide range of pickup bed sizes.
- No Tools Needed: Quick installation and removal - just use the tensioning mechanism to securely place.
- Non-Slip Grip: Rubber footpads keep the bar firmly in place without damaging your truck.
- Durability: Constructed from galvanized steel for long-term performance.
Types of Pickup Load Bars
We carry two models: a light-duty ratcheting cargo bar and a commercial-grade adjustable cargo bar.
Note: Because these rely on a tension fit, they do not have a working load limit. They cannot be used to hold up cargo or create decking. If you are looking for something a little more heavy-duty, check out our selection of shoring beams.
Ratcheting Cargo Bar
The light-duty version is adjustable to 70" and is ideal for pickup trucks.
To use a ratcheting cargo bar, you extend the bar to match the length of your trailer (or the space you need it to fit), then use the ratchet to incrementally tweak the tension until it is secure.
The ratchet also allows for a quick adjustment to the length - you can easily extend or retract when needed.
Adjustable Cargo Bar
The commercial-grade version extends to 104.5" and works in semi trailers and enclosed van trailers.
The easy-to-handle locks into place for fast tensioning, and the bolt-on padded feet are a sturdy 2-1/2" x 4" for no-slip traction. The truck bed cargo bar body has a galvanized coating for corrosion-resistance, and is 1.5" in diameter.
How to Choose the Right Truck Bed Cargo Bar
When selecting a pickup truck load bar, make sure you measure the interior width of your truck bed to match the bar's range. Additionally, heavy loads may require a ratcheting cargo bar for securement.
Maintenance Tips
- Wipe the bar clean after use.
- Inspect the footpads for wear to maintain grip and avoid bed damage.
- Store your bar inside the cab or toolbox to extend its life.
Frequently Asked Questions About Cargo Bars
What’s the difference between a cargo bar and a load lock?
They’re often used interchangeably. However, “cargo bar” typically refers to tension bars used in pickups or vans, while “load lock” often describes similar bars used in enclosed trailers or box trucks.
Can I use a pickup truck cargo bar in a trailer or SUV?
Yes. Most adjustable cargo bars are versatile enough to work in trailers, SUVs, or even cargo vans, as long as the dimensions fit.
How much weight can a pickup load bar handle?
Most bars are designed to brace cargo in place—not bear vertical weight. Always check product specs and avoid using cargo bars as decking beams.
Will it damage my truck bed?
Not if used properly. Truck bed cargo bars have padded or rubber ends to protect your interior walls. Just make sure the ends are clean before tightening.
Cargo Bar Holders
If not properly secured, cargo bars can be dangerous during a wreck, acting as projectiles. Make sure yours stay where they are supposed to with a cargo bar holder.
This product holds two standard or heavy-duty bars, and can be used with either square or rectangular bar feet.
