Using Wire Rope Clips

Wire rope clips or wire rope clamps can create an eye at the end of your wire rope when used in conjunction with wire rope thimbles. They clamp the dead end back to the live end.

Watch the video below to learn more about how to use these essential wire accessories:

Wire Rope Clamp Styles

These clamps come in two main styles, both of which can be used for a variety of applications.

Standard Wire Rope Clips

Ideal for heavy-duty rigging jobs, traditional cable clamps feature a U-bolt and saddle that is secured with nuts.

The U-bolt covers the dead end of the wire, while the saddle sits on the live end.

Fist Grip Guy Wire Clamps

The fist grip style consists of bolts and heavy hex nuts. The unique design makes installation a breeze - the operator can swing the wrench in a full arc each time!

Unlike the standard clips, you can install these at any orientation relative to the live and dead ends.

What Size Wire Rope Clamp Do I Need?

The size of the wire rope clip should correspond to the diameter of your wire rope. So if you are using a 5/8" diameter wire rope, you'll want a 5/8" wire clip.

Wire Rope Clip Construction

When it comes to choosing the right wire rope clamp for your application, it's also important to consider the clip construction.

Material Corrosion-Resistance

While all of our clips are suitable for outdoor use, they offer varying levels of corrosion-resistance.

Type 316 stainless steel is considered marine-grade, and is the best choice for jobs with maximum exposure to the elements or corrosive elements.

For more moderate exposure to these conditions, type 304 stainless steel will do the trick.

Next up in terms of corrosion-resistance are galvanized wire rope clips. They are an excellent combination of durability and affordability.

Lastly, we have zinc-plated clamps. They will show signs of rusting much quicker than any of the other styles we offer, but are well-suited for dry applications.

Forging Method

Another factor to take into account is how the clips are made. Drop-forging results in the strongest, most durable wire rope clips. Malleable or precision-cast clamps are designed for lighter loads.
