Federal Requirements for Projecting-Load Flags

Under 49 CFR 393.87, a commercial motor vehicle must use warning flags when a load extends:

• More than 4 inches beyond either side of the vehicle, or
• More than 4 feet beyond the rear of the vehicle

Each warning flag must be red or fluorescent orange and at least 18 inches square.

For a rear-projecting load that is 2 feet wide or less, one flag must be placed at the extreme rear. When the projecting load is wider than 2 feet, two flags are required to mark the rear corners. Side projections must also be marked at the outermost extremities as required by the regulation.
