Wide Loads and Oversize Loads: Regulations, Permits, and Equipment

Hauling wide loads or oversize loads can be a daunting challenge. There are many variables you must consider before taking on these jobs: permits, route selection, required truck and bed size, pilot cars, cargo securement equipment, and, of course, oversize load/wide load banners and signage.

Because wide load and oversize load regulations vary from state to state, the preparation required to haul these loads can often be more work than the haul itself.

Wide Loads vs. Oversize Loads: What's the Difference?

Determining whether a load is a wide load or an oversize load depends on its width and its weight. Generally, a load will be considered wide or oversize if...

  • Width is wider than 8'6"
  • Length is over 48' - 53'
  • Height is taller than 13.5'
  • Weight is more than 46,000 lbs.

More specifically, an oversize load exceeds ALL measurements.

A wide load typically only exceeds the standard width of 8'6" and meets the other requirements of height, length, and weight.

Exact measurement and weight requirements vary by state. It's important to know the regulations for each state you'll be hauling through to remain compliant.

When is a Wide Load or Oversize Load Permit Required?

If your load meets the requirements for being considered a wide or oversize load, you will need a permit. Specific permitting requirements will vary state to state, and you'll need to make sure you have a valid permit for each state you haul through.

For a comprehensive list of regulations by state, refer to our "Wide Load and Oversize Load Banner Requirements by State" post.

Different levels of permits are available, and special permits may need to be issued in certain situations.

Also, note that if your shipment can be broken down into smaller or lighter loads, you typically won't qualify for oversized load permits. See the requirements for your state to learn more.

Do Wide and Oversize Loads Need Pilot Vehicles?

Pilot vehicles warn drivers of any accidents, construction zones, bridges, low wires, or other upcoming hazards.

Depending on your load size and route details, pilot vehicles may be required.

Specific requirements will vary based on state, but generally, if your shipment exceeds 12' in width, you may need 1-2 pilot vehicles.

Remember, many states only allow you to travel with pilot vehicles from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

Can Wide or Oversize Loads be on Any Route at Any Time?

Beyond permit and pilot vehicle requirements, you should also consider the following when hauling wide and oversize loads:

  • Travel Times: Some states restrict the transport of wide or oversize loads during specific times of the day. Many states only allow you to travel with pilot vehicles from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. They may also restrict your travel during holidays and over weekends. Check state requirements to stay in compliance.
  • Routes: Generally, oversize loads are allowed on any route. However, wide loads are only allowed on routes pre-approved by authorities. Again, check state requirements to ensure you're on an appropriate route.

What Equipment is Needed for Hauling Oversize or Wide Loads?

Again, this will depend on the size of your shipment. Generally, you need:

  • Red safety flags on all four corners of your tractor-trailer
  • Amber warning lights on top of the cab to meet visibility requirements.
  • Oversize load signs or wide load banners in both the front and rear of your vehicle.
  • Pilot vehicles may also need flags and lights.
