How to Install E-Track in a Trailer

How to Install E-Track in a Trailer

Installing E-track in a trailer is one of the most effective ways to create a flexible cargo securement system that will hold up. No matter what you're hauling, E-track gives you multiple tie-down points and the ability to quickly reposition straps, cargo bars, and other fittings.

Proper installation is critical. The strength of your E-track system depends heavily on how & where the rails are mounted.

In this guide, we'll walk you through the basic steps for installing E-track in an enclosed trailer.

Choosing the Right Location for E-Track

Before installing E-track rails, determine where in your trailer they will provide the most functionality.

In most enclosed trailers, E-track rails are mounted along the trailer walls so straps can secure cargo from multiple angles. If you're hauling vehicles or specialized equipment, the spacing of your rails might depend on the width of the tires or the size of your load.

For example, in our installation video, we measured 26 1/4" inches from the trailer wall to position the rails for a vehicle with wide tires.

Your measurements don't need to be perfect down to the millimeter, but they should be consistent so the track runs straight.

Avoid placing E-track rails where they will interfere with trailer doors, ramps, or other equipment.

Types of E-Track for Trailer Installation

E-track rails come in several common lengths and finishes. Typical sizes include:

Most enclosed trailers use 8-foot galvanized E-track rails, which provide corrosion resistance and continuous tie-down points along the trailer wall.

USCC also offers custom lengths of E-track if you need a full length of rail not listed above.

Tools and Hardware Needed

Installing E-track requires a few common tools:

  • Drill or impact driver
  • Self-drilling screws or bolts
  • Measuring tape
  • Marker or pencil
  • Level

Hardware will depend on your trailer construction. USCC offers E-track hardware packs that include everything you need based on your installation material, style, and size.

Step-by-Step: Installing E-Track in a Trailer

Step 1: Measure and Mark Rail Location

Start by measuring and marking where your first E-track rail will be mounted. Mark both ends of the rail so it runs straight along the trailer wall or floor. Try to be consistent, but don't worry about being 100% exact.

Step 2: Position the E-Track Rail

Place the E-track along your marked line.

Before installing, make sure your track is clear of obstacles like ramps or doors. Also, make sure the rails align with any structural supports, if possible, for the most secure installation.

Step 3: Install Screws

Start by securing the rail with the first and last fasteners. Typically, a screw every 2-3 holds provides more than enough strength.

Trigger the drill slowly to avoid stripping the screws and reducing the strength of the install.

Step 4: Install E-Track End Caps (optional, but recommended)

Finish your E-track system by installing E-track end caps.

End caps slide onto the end of the rail before the final fastener is installed. When the fastener is tightened, it secures the end cap in place.

End caps serve two important purposes: They cover sharp edges at the end of the rail, and they reduce tripping.

E-Track Accessories for Trailer Cargo Control

Once your E-track rails are installed, you can use a wide array of accessories to secure cargo, such as:
