ApplicationsShackles are used in lifting and stationary applications as connecting links for
wire rope,
rope,
chain, and
lifting slings. Screw pin shackles are typically used in non-permanent applications. Bolt type shackles are typically used in long-term/permanent applications, or where the load has potential to slide on the pin, causing a rotation of the pin. Chain/D shackles are typically used for one-leg systems, and anchor/bow shackles are typically used for multi-leg systems.
Proper UsageIn-line loading is the proper way to use this product. Improper usage will reduce the WLL and could result in deformation of the shackle. Side loads should be avoided. Ensuring the shackle pin is correctly screwed into the eye occurs when the collar of the pin is completely seated on the shackle eye. The pin must be the correct length to penetrate the full depth of the screwed eye, and allow the collar of the pin to seat on the surface of the shackle eye. Never replace a shackle pin, unless it’s with the same size, type and make. Misuse will decrease the WLL and may cause deformation or failure of the product. Selecting the correct type of shackle and the WLL appropriate for the application is critical. Properly supporting the load means the shackle’s body is centered with the load perpendicular to the pin. Angling the shackle will reduce WLL and may cause instability and deformation. Avoid applications where movement may cause the pin to rotate and possible come unscrewed. In such applications, or if the shackle is to be left in place for long periods of time, maximum pin security can be achieved with bolt type shackles.
InspectionInspection of shackles should occur no less than every six months, and more frequently when used under severe operating conditions. Regular inspections should be conducted in order to detect deformations or alterations of the material structure due to wear, misuse, overloading and adverse conditions.
MaterialDepending on the purpose of use, different raw materials are used for the production of shackles and other lifting devices. The following raw materials can be applied to these shackles:
- Mild steel, untreated, comparable to grade 3
- High tensile steel, untreated or normalized, comparable to grade 4
- High tensile steel, quenched and tempered, comparable to grade 6
- Alloy steel, quenched and tempered, comparable to grade 8
