Also often called “trucker chain” in the industry due to its popularity in securing flatbed loads, grade 70 chain offers an efficient weight-to-strength ratio due to the drop forging and heat treating in the manufacturing process.
Grade 70 chain can be easily identified by its yellow zinc chromate finish and either 7, 70, or 700 embossed into the surface.
Our 5/16’’ chain size is available in pre-cut lengths equipped with a grab hook on each end. A full drum is also available in a 550’ length. Custom cut lengths and half drums are available by special order by calling our sales team.
We offer both ratchet binders and a lever binder options.
Two measurements determine the size of the binder, which means different sizes of chain can be used with it, but since different grades have different working load limits, each binder will be marked with the appropriate chain sizes for both types of chain.
When choosing a binder and chain, remember the weakest link theory and choose a working load limit equal to or greater than the chain.
For example, a 5/16″ – 3/8″ Lever Binder can be used with 5/16″ Grade 70 Transport Chain or it can be used with 3/8″ Grade 43 High Test Chain. Small binders can technically be used for both 5/16″ or 3/8″ chain in either grade, but if you pair one with 3/8″ Grade 70 transport chain the binder will be weaker than the chain, making the binder the weakest part of the assembly. If you are working with 3/8″ Grade 70 chain, the best choice is to pair it with a 3/8″ – 1/2″ chain binder so that binder and the chain are of equal strength.
There are three common types of hooks used for grade 70 transport chain:
Clevis Grab Hook: A shallow throat opening allows for easy and secure connections.
Clevis Slip Hook: Also referred to as a sling hook, is durable and features a wider throat than the clevis grab hooks. These hooks can be attached easily to chains, and allow more versatility within your tie down assembly.
Clevis Slip Hook with Safety Latch: Features a wider throat than a clevis grab hook; designed with a safety latch over the wide throat of the hook to ensure the chain is held in place.
