Wire Rope Slings

Wire Rope Profile for 6 x 19 ConfigurationWire rope slings are a popular choice in lifting slings due to their strength, durability, and are available in many different sizes and configurations.  We carry a full line of 6x19 wire rope lifting slings in 1/4" to 1" diameters (seen in Figure A) as well as 6x37 wire rope steel slings in 1-1/8" to 1-1/2".  Wire slings come in many different sizes and configurations and are primarily classified into 4 major categories with a few exceptions.  The four major categories of wire slings are 6x7, 6x19, 6x37, and 8x19.  The categories are determined by how many wires make up a strand and how many strands are wrapped around the core.  Our wire rope slings are 6x19 (6 strands of 19 wires) or 6x37 (6 strands of 37 wires) in the larger diameter wire ropes.

Wire Rope Breakdown to Wire, Core, StrandTo help you understand the configuration of the wire rope sling, just look at the diagram (marked Figure B) to the right.  The layout of a wire rope is similar to that of rope made from natural fibers.  Individual wires are twisted to form a strand.  Then, the strands are twisted around the core to form the wire rope.  The core can be made of several different materials depending on the manufacturer including steel, or natural fibers such as sisal, manila, henequen, jute or hemp.  Our wire rope is made with EIPS - IWRC, or Extra Improved Plowed Steel - Independent Wire Rope Core.  These terms will be mentioned throughout our Wire Rope Sling category.

The wire rope slings can be made into several different lifting slings, just like our nylon slings, such as eye & eye (or single leg), sliding choker wire slings, 2 leg bridles, 3 leg bridles and 4 leg bridle wire rope slings.  When the eyes of the steel lifting sling are made, there can be a risk that the strain of the lift may force the wire rope to bend too tightly and shorten the life of the wire sling.  Upon request, they can be fitted with many different fittings to help extend the life of the sling including a sling hook, or a thimble, crescent thimble, or slip-thru thimble or you can look at our ultra-flexible cable laid slings.  If wear and tear will possibly be an issue, you might want to consider a chain sling if the application is suitable.
