A wire rope clip sometimes called a U-bolt clamp, U-bolt clip, wire rope clamps or wire cable clips, is a piece of equipment used to clamp the loose end of wire rope after it has been looped back to form an eye. These wire rope fittings consist of a u-bolt and has a saddle that is secured in place by two nuts. Wire rope assemblies generally require at least two or three wire rope clips to properly secure the ends to the length of the wire rope.
We offer several different sizes of our wire rope clips in five different categories based on fabrication: galvanized drop forged, zinc-plated malleable, drop forged stainless steel, precision cast type 316 stainless steel, and precision cast type 304 stainless steel. When using a wire rope clip to create an eye and secure the wire cable ends, the saddle and nuts of the clips should be on the opposite end of the terminated end (or dead end) of the cable when forming the loop, which explains the popular saying throughout the rigging industry" "Never saddle a dead horse."
When the eye is put under a load, there's a risk that the eye will become too elongated, stretching the wires and shortening the working life of the wire rope. Adding a wire rope thimble
to the eye can help lengthen the service life of the rope by adding a layer of protection to the rope.
Choosing the correct type of wire rope
is also important when using a wire rope clip. Safety note: Wire rope clips should not be used on plastic-coated cable, unless the plastic is first stripped off. Install wire rope clips over bare cable only. Nuts on wire rope clips should be re-tightened/re-torqued regularly.
Wire rope clips are not intended for use in overhead lifting applications. For more information on the use of wire rope clips, see our USCC Blog post: How to Use Wire Rope Clips.
Our line of wire rope clips includes: Drop Forged Galvanized Wire Rope Clips
Extremely strong due to the drop forged process, then galvanized to increase resistance to moisture and chloride corrosion. Excellent for critical, heavy-duty uses like guy wires, support lines, tie downs, etc.Malleable Wire Rope Clamps - Zinc Plated
In a softer metal, malleable wire rope clamps are intended for light duty, non-critical applications like fencing, guard rails, hand rails, etc. Never use malleable wire rope clips for heavy duty, critical, overhead loads such as support lines, towing lines, scaffolds, tie downs, etc. Zinc-plating adds corrosion resistance. Drop Forged 316 Stainless Steel Wire Rope Clips
Stainless steel is drop forged for extreme strength. Considered “marine grade,” Type 316 stainless steel has added molybdenum to help resist corrosion to chlorides like sea salt water and de-icing salts, so it’s ideal for harsh environmental conditions.Precision Cast 304 Stainless Steel Wire Rope Clips
Corrosion-resistant and extremely durable, type 304 stainless steel is precision cast for exact specifications and quality. Precision Cast 316 Stainless Steel Wire Rope Clamps
Type 316 stainless steel, also called “marine grade” stainless steel has added molybdenum for increased resistance against corrosion, especially in chloride environments that can lead to pitting. Precision cast for quality and exacting specifications.
