More About Regular/Light Duty Thimbles Stainless Steel 316
The Regular Duty Thimble, sometimes called standard or light duty, comes in stainless steel type 316 for added resistance to high moisture or corrosive environments. Marine rigging often is very hard on a galvanized product as the surface rust accelerates to the core of the material. By using Type 316 Stainless Steel, the material contains an element called molybdenum which adds to the corrosive resistant properties opposed to the more common type 304. The chromium in the stainless thimble has a natural ability to form a passive layer of rust on the surface which does not accelerate to the core. Rope thimbles are inserted into loops, or eyes, of a wire rope ending to prolong the life of the wire rope. Steel thimbles help keep the eye from crushing and deforming the wire while also providing protection at a point of contact. Thimbles are an important part of the rigging industry and are a necessity for rigging professionals.
