Like most equipment, there is a range of hand trucks and dollies with different features for different jobs and uses. Simple steel small hand trucks are good for smaller jobs and lighter items, but with a load capacity of 400 lbs., even our most basic model is no lightweight. If you’re in the market for a basic steel style but with more weight capacity, choose one with rubber wheels and the capacity increases to over 700 lbs.

An aluminum hand dolly is also a great choice if you’re looking for a basic style, but the aluminum fabrication will increase the price. However, the advantage of aluminum is that’s durable yet lightweight so the overall weight of the load will be lighter to haul. Load capacities for basic aluminum models are around 600 lbs.

Lightweight foldable carts, also called collapsible hand carts are another option if you’re looking for a cart but are short on storage space. Foldable models generally have a larger holding area which can come in handy if you’re hauling wider items. Generally, all of these types of basic hand truck dollies do not have a strap built-in, so be sure to have a strap available if you need to secure the load. Another rule of thumb to keep in mind when loading a dolly hand truck is to load heavier items on the bottom (for example, when moving a stack of boxes). Loading items on top will create a top-heavy affect which can be difficult and even dangerous to maneuver.

If you plan on hauling heavier items like appliances, a handtruck built for appliances is your best choice. An appliance hand truck , also sometimes called an industrial hand truck, is generally made of heavy duty steel and has built-in straps with tightening devices to secure the load. Industrial hand trucks are also sometimes designed with built-in padding to better protect items in comparison to a light utility small hand truck.

If you choose a 2- wheel hand truck model without built-in padding, you can buy a padded appliance truck cover for an upright hand truck cart. They’re great for reducing dings and scratches when hauling something valuable, but can be removed when not needed. The covers are designed to cover the metal portion of the hand truck cart and then strap on to stay in place. Different styles are available, depending on whether you have a curved round top or a square top cart hand truck.

Although it may be tempting to consider cheap hand trucks when shopping around, be sure to buy hand truck that’s sized right for your job. Design and construction will determine weight limit, don’t forget to consider the kind of items you’ll be hauling and what type of terrain (stairs, ramps, etc.). Spending more to buy a quality hand truck for sale is most likely the best choice.

If you’re looking for an increased load limit and a wider platform for hauling items, try a 4-wheel style dolly instead of a two wheel hand truck. Although loading an item on appliance hand trucks (also called appliance carts), requires it be fully picked up as opposed to sliding it like with a 2-wheel steel hand truck, a 4-wheel style offers more options because of its wider base.
