Wire slings come in many different sizes and configurations and are primarily classified into 4 major categories: 6x7, 6x19, 6x37, and 8x19. US Cargo Control carries the two most popular sizes: 6x19 and 6x37.
The layout of a steel rope is similar to that of rope made from natural fibers. Individual wires are twisted to form a strand. The strands are then twisted around the core to form the wire rope. The core can be made of several different materials depending on the manufacturer, including steel or natural fibers such as sisal, manila, henequen, jute or hemp. Our steel wire rope slings are made with Extra Improved Plowed Steel (EIPS) around an Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC) for the ultimate in strength and durability.
Our slings are inspected, certified and tagged with capacity, care and instruction tags. Metal tags are available for a minimal additional cost. Certification and proof testing documentation is available by request and should be requested at the time the order is placed.
Wire rope slings have a number of lifting sling configurations just like our nylon slings:
Single leg wire sling
Sometimes called eye & eye slings because of an oval "eye" at each end, these rope slings are rugged and reliable and a very popular choice among wire slings. The eyes are formed using a flemish eye splice and secured with a carbon steel sleeve.
Sliding choker wire slings
Our steel wire rope sliding choker slings are made of 6 x 19 wire rope and have a sliding choker hook between the two eyes that slides from one end to the other for easy hook-up. The sliding choker wire rope sling comes in diameters from 3/8" to 1" diameter.
Sliding choker slings are available in 2 different styles: Style A has a regular eye for the top portion of the lifting sling and a thimble eye for the portion of the sling that loops back to attach to the sliding hook. This helps prevent wear and tear on the sling eye by protecting the steel cable rope from rubbing on the hook itself. Style B has regular eyes on both ends. The eye that bends back to the sliding hook does not have the protective thimble. Our sliding choker slings are also available with a latched choker hook by special order.
**The small loop “eyes” on our single leg wire slings and sliding choker slings can undergo extreme pressure during use, which can shorten the life of the wire sling. We can add many different fittings to help combat this problem, including a sling hook, thimble, crescent thimble, or slip-thru thimble. Ultra Flexible Cable Laid
Cable laid steel wire slings are manufactured using ultra flexible 7 x 7 x 7 galvanized aircraft cables to offer more flexibility than a standard steel wire cable sling. Though the cable laid sling is weaker in strength than the standard wire rope, it is corrosion resistant as well. Our standard
cable laid slings have eyes on both ends. However, just as with our single leg slings, there are other fittings that we can assemble on the ends including thimbles, hooks, crescent thimbles, and slip-thru thimbles to create the custom steel strand lift sling you need. If wear and tear is a potential issue for your environment, you might want to consider a
chain sling if the application is suitable.
2-Leg Bridles, 3-Leg Bridles, 4-Leg Bridle Slings
Our bridle slings are made of durable 6x19 wire rope to make them reliable. With a flemish eye that is spliced with a carbon steel sleeve, the bridle design is tough and durable, whether you choose the 2-, 3-, or 4-leg design of wire straps.
Along with a range of custom steel cable slings, we also carry related products and accessories like stainless steel wire rope, ratchet straps, nylon rope, tie down supplies and more.
